2001 Pinot gris reviews

*****

Pale straw. Slightly oaky bouquet. Powerful, creamy palate, rather Chardonnay-like, with grapefruit and nut flavours showing excellent ripeness and intensity. Fat, rich and rounded, with good mouthfeel, a deliciously soft texture and a long, slightly off-dry finish.

Martinborough vineyard Pinot Gris (about $32) is in complete contrast to the previous, fruit driven wines. It has been treated more like a chardonnay with malolactic fermentation and some barrel ageing, resulting in a superbly complex wine with an extra diminesion; nutty, mealy overtones, with hints of spice underlying the sweet fruit. Length, balance and charm make this one of New Zelands best pinot gris yet.****1/2 V.

***** Fragant, strongly varietal wine, delicious in its youth. A blend of Martinborough (70%) and upper Wairarapa (30%) grapes, 55% barrel-fermented. Rich stone-fruit, citrus and spice flavours, with subtle oak, satisfying weight and excellent harmony.

2001 Martinborough Vineyard Pinot Gris ****
Raised eyebrows immediately, “Big, broad, ebullient” say my notes. “A pinot gris for Chardonnay lovers,” wrote Christine. From the rich stonefruit and butterscotch nose through to the rum toffee characters on the palate, it wields a big stick. Nicely textured. I noted a little heat on the finish.

Michael Cooper’s Buyers Guide 2003

The 2001 vintage (*****) was handled in a mix of stainless steel tanks and seasoned oak barrels (at least five years old). A slightly more fruit-driven style than the complex, creamy 2000 (*****), it’s a very satisfying and weighty wine with rich stone-fruit, citrus and spice flavours and subtle oak adding complexity. Fragrant and intensely varietal, it’s a very harmonious wine, delicious already.
